Navy is just one of those colours that does not work for me and I’ve mostly purged from my wardrobe. I do get the allure of those wonderfully comfortable clothes that come out every winter. I’m just waiting for the really cold weather so I can bust out some of my favorites.

Thank you for this excellent article.💕

Thank you for reading and responding! I hear you on realising that there are some colours that just won't work for you - I feel as though I'm gradually doing that with any grey that is not very dark.

Grey and I had a discussion and we’re good.😊

Grey is obviously happier with you than me, but happily it looks as though Navy and I are going to work out 😂💙

I’m so happy for you both!😁💙🩶

I’ve been wearing a lot of navy lately too. Personally I love the shade of navy that leans towards black, I find it so beautiful and I’m always looking for it.

Also I think navy and lavender are really pretty together :-) Enjoy your sweaters!

The roll-neck sweater is “midnight”, so it looks blue when I wear it with black jeans, and black when I wear it with blue! Such a good color!

I love that you’re giving navy a chance and that the incorporation of it into your wardrobe has been seamless. Like you, I’ve always gravitated towards black clothing. I did acquire a navy cashmere sweater a few years ago that I occasionally wear, but not as much as my black or grey ones. I feel a shift more toward charcoal lately which feels “safe” to me! Funny how we attach rules and memories to colors and then let those things limit us.

Yes! I’ve totally been letting myself be limited. I like charcoal, and I love greys on other people, but I just don’t wear them, probably because of the school thing, and because it’s just Not Black. But I am enjoying the novelty of embracing navy!

Navy happens to be my favourite colour of all time and I love your observations on wearing it. I’ve always favoured it because I like blue and the sea in general and I like the nautical associations. I also adore the craft of indigo dyeing and denim so I suppose it’s all related. Recently I’ve been wearing more colour and I feel like navy seems to pair easily with them (I love navy and red and navy with mustard yellow or chartreuse).

Oh, I love those associations with navy - and I do love indigo! I will try to work on wearing navy with more colours this winter. Last year I wore the navy skirt a lot with green boots, and loved that combination, but now I need to find a new cobbler as the boots need heeled!

Love this, Louise, and I’d quote that wonderful last line but it would feel like giving away the biggest spoiler! Ahhh, the “New Clothes magic dust!” … and the gradual draw to navy, as an alternative to trusty black, which I relate to very much and have found myself doing (I love that you mention the influence of what we wore in childhood, too—your always being put in blue—as, again, navy was the colour of my first secondary school uniform, before brown, and I have a similar ‘colour block’ there, too, I think! 🤔) And your mother sounds INCREDIBLE (what style!). 💙 (but navy!) Our uniform was grey - maybe that's why I don't like it much but find myself weirdly drawn to it? And I've only just realised that despite the time it took me to reconcile to blue after all those years of having to wear it because it went with my eyes... I'm always buying my blue-eyed grandaughter blue clothes!

That’s so interesting! I am SO enjoying these deep dives into what makes us drawn to specific colours, textures, all of it … and love, love that you are now doing the same for your blue-eyed granddaughter! 🥹 What goes around …. precious! XXX
